The Caribbean's film scene gets its spotlight next week. CANA News reports the second annual 284 Excellence Film Festival gets underway in the British Virgin Islands on October 29, running four days through November 1 under the theme "Uniting Creative Voices, Celebrating Caribbean Stories."
Organized by the BVI Tourist Board & Film Commission, the festival will feature international, regional and national film screenings alongside industry masterclasses, practical workshops, networking opportunities and an awards celebration recognizing excellence in filmmaking. The 2026 edition has attracted 30 film submissions from 10 countries and territories, including St. Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica, the United States, Australia, Curaçao, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands and Guadeloupe.
"What began as a vision to create greater opportunities for our local filmmakers is slowly evolving into a platform that celebrates Caribbean creativity," BVI Film Commissioner and Festival Director Natalie Hodge told CANA News, adding that the territory is positioning itself as a destination where filmmaking and storytelling can thrive.
According to the festival's official site, the program opens with an invitation-only welcome event on October 28, followed by themed nights including Food & Film, Friday Night Lights and Caribbean Chronicles, closing with the Fade to Black awards ceremony on November 1. What started in 2021 as a local film competition has grown into an international festival with its roots still firmly local.
The festival is also investing in the next generation. Its Say Less student smartphone film competition — with an extended entry deadline that closed October 3 — challenges young filmmakers to shoot entirely on phones, while workshops range from drone cinematography to industry greenlight forums. Add official hotel partnerships offering deep discounts and the BVI Tourist Board's pitch of "film plus vacation," and the 284 Excellence formula is clear: come for the cinema, stay for the islands, and leave with the territory on your location scout's shortlist.
