Dr. Peter Odili, the former Governor of Rivers State, has petitioned the Nigeria Immigration Service in a Federal High Court in Abuja over the seizure of his passport at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
He claimed that the international passport was confiscated from him on June 20 by operatives of the service and has been withheld since then in the fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on Wednesday.
Odili requested the presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, to order the service to release the passport and to issue a permanent injunction against the respondents, prohibiting them from harassing him or interfering with his fundamental rights of travel.
The former governor's passport, however, was seized by the immigration agency because he was on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's watchlist.
The service's declaration also stated that Mr Odili had never inquired as to why his passport had been taken or requested its release.
Afterwards when, Justice Mohammed set a hearing date for September 28, 2021.
