Colorado State University Guarantees Admission to In-State Students With a 3.0 GPA or Higher

Colorado State University has launched a pilot programme guaranteeing admission to Colorado high school graduates with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, the university announced on October 26, 2026. The guarantee applies to students applying for Summer or Fall 2027 freshman admission.

According to Colorado State University News and Media Relations, the pilot covers graduates of public, private and charter high schools, as well as homeschooled students with a Colorado family address, who have completed at least six semesters of coursework. Admission is guaranteed subject to a state-approved non-academic conduct review, although direct entry into more competitive majors is not guaranteed.

The programme builds on an earlier guarantee for Denver Public Schools students and is timed with Colorado Free Application Days, which ran from October 20 to October 22, 2026, according to Colorado Public Radio. Applying to Colorado State University is always free for Colorado students, the university says, removing both cost and uncertainty from the application for qualifying students.

The move comes as universities across the United States compete for a shrinking pool of high school graduates. By guaranteeing admission on a clear grade threshold, Colorado State is aiming to keep more of the state's graduates in state and to give students and families a straightforward answer early in the application process.

What happens next is a test of whether the guarantee changes application behaviour. If the pilot draws more Colorado students to apply, the university may expand it; for now, qualifying students can apply knowing that a 3.0 GPA secures their place, even if their preferred major still requires a separate review.
