San Diego County and nearly 700 community members celebrated the grand opening of the new Casa de Oro Library in Spring Valley on Saturday, October 17, according to San Diego News Online. The 12,000-square-foot branch at 9610 Campo Road is twice the size of its predecessor and was designed around years of community input.
The new building includes a 2,000-square-foot community room, dedicated study rooms, a teen space with colors and furniture chosen by local teens, and two outdoor patios, the Poet's Patio and the Children's Patio. Artwork by six local artists inspired by area stories and landscapes is featured throughout the building, the county library says.
County Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe joined library officials at the ribbon cutting. According to the San Diego County Library, the branch is pursuing LEED Gold certification, with solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, native landscaping, electric vehicle charging stations and an underground rainwater capture system built into the design.
Community members say the new branch fills a real gap in Casa de Oro, a neighborhood that has long wanted a larger gathering place. Beyond books, the library offers high-speed internet, laptops, 3D printing, a homework center and a Friends of the Library bookstore, giving residents of all ages a free place to learn, work and connect.
The opening is part of a broader wave of library investment across the county, and local leaders say it reflects what residents asked for most: more room, more light and more space shaped by the community itself. The branch is now open on its regular schedule, and a garden expo and succulent swap are already planned on the grounds for October 24.
The county library says the new branch more than doubles the space of the facility it replaces, and the two outdoor patios will host community programming year-round. A garden expo and succulent swap planned for October 24 will be among the first events held on the new grounds, giving neighbors another reason to visit in the coming weeks.
