As artificial intelligence reshapes creative work, one film festival is putting a price on the human touch. Indie Shorts Mag reports that the Sapporo International Short Film Festival has launched a ¥200,000 Human Intelligence Prize in partnership with Vancouver-based YumeBau Inc., recognizing human creativity and craftsmanship in filmmaking. Announced on October 20, 2026, the new special award will go to a film already nominated in the festival's international competition — it is not a separate call for submissions. YumeBau founder and CEO Wilson J. Tang will serve as the prize's judge, with the winner revealed at the awards ceremony on Friday, October 23, beginning at 4 p.m. Japan Standard Time. The festival describes the award as honoring films whose techniques and scenes demonstrate the artistry and skill of human hands. Tang told Indie Shorts Mag that acknowledging human storytelling and craftsmanship is increasingly important as AI reshapes creative work — a philosophy summed up in YumeBau's motto: "Made By Humans. Made For Humans." The announcement does not specify a blanket ban on AI tools. Tang's connection to Sapporo runs deep: he served on the festival's international jury in 2015, and his earlier career included work as a visual effects art director at Industrial Light & Magic on Star Wars: Episode II, A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Hulk. The 21st Sapporo Short Fest runs October 23–25 at Concarino in Sapporo's Kotoni district, per sapporo.travel. The prize lands at a moment of genuine industry anxiety. Festivals worldwide are wrestling with how to handle AI-assisted work — some creating dedicated AI categories, others tightening disclosure rules — and Sapporo's answer is pointed: reward the human hand explicitly. With the 21st edition running October 23–25 at the Concarino venue in Sapporo's Kotoni district, and the Human Intelligence winner announced on opening day, the festival has given the global AI-and-art debate its most concrete provocation yet: a cash prize for being unmistakably human.
