Therapists Differ on How Long to Wait Before Dating Again After Divorce

There is no single agreed waiting period before dating again after a divorce, with therapists' guidance ranging from six months to 18 months or more, according to two 2026 guides on dating after divorce.

According to HeyPalaura's 2026 guide, many therapists recommend waiting at least 6 to 12 months, or up to a full year after the divorce is final, while MedCircle suggests 12 to 24 months. Legal experts advise waiting until the divorce is officially finalised, because a pending case can complicate custody and support.

According to Empathi's guide, one licensed marriage and family therapist advises a minimum of 18 months after divorce before entering anything serious, noting that relationships begun within the first year after a divorce have significantly higher failure rates, and that the nervous system needs time to recalibrate.

Both guides agree that the marker should be internal rather than calendar-based, according to LoveCertain's guide: a person is ready when they can describe what came before without their voice changing, when their week has structural space, and when they are dating because they want a relationship rather than because they want the previous one to be over.

The guides also advise waiting before introducing children to a new partner. According to LoveCertain, introductions should wait until a new relationship has lasted at least four to six months, past the early rush and past at least one significant disagreement, with the first meeting short, neutral and activity-based.
