BronxWorks and the New York City Administration for Children's Services celebrated the grand opening of the new Uptown Family Enrichment Center on Monday, October 12, at 3535 Holland Avenue in the Williamsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, according to Harlem World Magazine. Community members, partners and supporters gathered to tour the new space and learn about its programs.
The center is operated by BronxWorks, which has deep roots in the neighborhood, and is designed as a welcoming, home-like space where families can connect, learn and lead. Offerings include free family-friendly activities such as parent mixers, family game nights, women empowerment groups and seasonal festivities.
"The Uptown FEC brings families together, fosters a strong sense of community, and creates opportunities for connection and support," said Eileen Torres, CEO of BronxWorks, in remarks at the opening. She credited the partnership with the Administration for Children's Services for bringing the much-needed resource to the neighborhood.
According to the center's own announcement, families in Williamsbridge and Baychester have already helped shape the programming, sharing ideas for what they want to see in their community. The Family Enrichment Center model builds on strengths that already exist within neighborhoods, creating opportunities for residents to learn from one another and shape the future of their community.
The grand opening was described as both a milestone and a beginning. Organizers say the real measure of the center will be the connections families build inside it in the months and years ahead.
The center follows the Family Enrichment Center model pioneered by the Administration for Children's Services, which builds on strengths already present in neighborhoods rather than imposing programs from outside. BronxWorks, the operator, has long served the Williamsbridge and Baychester areas, and local families helped shape the activities the new space will offer.
