New York Waives College Application Fees at SUNY, CUNY and 130 Schools

New York launched its annual College Application Month this week, waiving application fees at SUNY and CUNY campuses and more than 130 participating colleges across the state. The initiative, announced by the governor's office, is designed to remove cost barriers and boost college enrollment among high school seniors, according to Sun Community News.

During the application window, students can apply to participating public colleges and universities without paying the usual application fees, which can add up to hundreds of dollars for students applying to multiple schools. State officials say the fee waivers are part of a broader push to make higher education more accessible and affordable.

The program covers SUNY's four-year campuses, community colleges and technology schools, as well as CUNY's colleges in New York City, alongside dozens of private institutions that agreed to participate. High school counselors across the state have been encouraged to guide students through the process before deadlines arrive.

State leaders framed the initiative as an investment in New York's workforce. With employers in fields from health care to technology clamoring for trained workers, officials say getting more young people into college, trade programs and degree pathways is essential to the state's economic future.

The governor's office urged families to take advantage of the fee waivers while they last and to explore the state's financial aid programs at the same time. For many first-generation students, officials noted, simply removing the application fee can be the difference between applying and giving up.

The initiative is part of a broader affordability agenda that includes expanded tuition assistance and record state investment in public campuses. Officials say removing application fees is one of the simplest, cheapest ways to widen the college pipeline, and they point to rising application numbers in past years as proof it works.
