Denzel Washington has found his next film, and it reunites two heavyweights at the top of their game. Deadline reports that the two-time Oscar winner will star in an untitled crime thriller directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the filmmaker behind the last four Mission: Impossible movies. Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber's United Artists have greenlit the project for a theatrical release on October 1, 2027.
According to Deadline, the script by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner follows a former police detective serving a life sentence who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Granted compassionate release with six months to live, he returns home hoping to reconcile with the estranged daughter he left behind and meet a grandson he never knew existed — only to find his dark past has not forgotten him. The project was previously known internally as The Frame, and filming is expected to begin in New Jersey in November 2026.
The Hollywood Reporter notes the film marks McQuarrie's first major directing assignment since closing out his decade-long Mission: Impossible run with 2025's The Final Reckoning, and a deliberate return to the crime genre of his early career (The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher). He will also produce alongside his wife Heather McQuarrie.
The project landed on Washington's slate after his planned reunion with Antoine Fuqua on Netflix's Hannibal epic stalled in pre-production over budget concerns, per Deadline. The actor's calendar remains packed: he recently returned to Broadway in Othello opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, starred in Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest, and will next appear in Netflix's The Take with Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones in 2027.
