Jamie Foxx Returns to Stand-Up With Hulu Special Take Care of Yourself After 2023 Stroke

Jamie Foxx is back on the stand-up stage with the most personal hour of his life. Jamie Foxx: Take Care of Yourself, which premiered on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on October 7, finds the Oscar winner turning his 2023 brain bleed and stroke — an ordeal that nearly cost him his life — into comedy about aging, mortality and second chances.

Foxx has been promoting the special through interviews with ABC News and The Hollywood Reporter, speaking candidly about a recovery that left him unable to walk and fearing he might not make it. The special blends that candor with celebrity riffs on Kim Kardashian, LeBron James and Donald Trump, and features a show-stopping moment with his daughter Anelise joining him on stage. He also told reporters he removed or softened material after the fallout from the Kevin Hart roast, and that he will avoid algorithm-driven platforms like Shannon Sharpe's Club Shay Shay because viral clips can amplify controversy.

The special is being framed as an evolution. The 58-year-old Ray star already confronted death in his 2024 comeback What Had Happened Was…; in Take Care of Yourself, he's facing his age while preparing for a new life with pregnant girlfriend Alyce Huckstepp. "I almost died," Foxx said in his Hollywood Reporter interview. "When you almost died, you're not going to be like, 'knock knock, who's there.' You got to get into it."

Early notices praise director Troy Miller's steady pacing and Foxx's mix of energy and vulnerability. With two sports dramas on the way — including Fight for '84 — Foxx told THR he's simply thankful to be working: "I want you to see the next stuff that I'm doing and go, 'wow.'" For a performer who has done it all — comedy, music, an Oscar — the bravest act yet may be standing on stage and telling the truth.
