Madonna has reached the Billboard Hot Dance/Pop Songs chart for the first time in her four-decade career, as "I Feel So Free," the lead single from her forthcoming album Confessions II, debuts at No. 12 this week. According to Billboard, the chart, which blends dance and pop, was only introduced relatively recently, making the icon a first-time visitor despite a lifetime of hits in both styles.
As Forbes notes, the debut is a notable footnote in chart history: had the ranking existed decades earlier, Madonna would almost certainly rank among its most successful acts ever. This week, only two tracks launch on the Hot Dance/Pop Songs tally, and they sit side by side, with rising talent ADELA's "KGB" starting at No. 11, one position above Madonna, as both narrowly miss top 10 debuts.
The appearance comes as Madonna continues to keep a high live profile following her Celebration Tour, with Confessions II positioned as her next studio chapter. The single's arrival on the chart suggests the album campaign is finding immediate traction with dance and pop audiences.
For an artist whose chart career spans the Hot 100, Dance Club Songs and seemingly every Billboard ranking in between, adding one more tally to the collection, even four decades in, is a fitting milestone.
The single is the first taste of Confessions II, Madonna's forthcoming studio album and the sequel to her dance-floor landmark Confessions on a Dance Floor. The project arrives on the heels of her career-spanning Celebration Tour, which reminded audiences why she remains pop's most durable live draw. That a song called "I Feel So Free" is giving her a first-ever entry on a chart that did not exist for most of her career is a neat encapsulation of Madonna's late-career story: still finding new rooms in a house she helped build, four decades after she moved in.
