Ontario schools are marking Treaties Recognition Week from November 1 to 7, 2026, with classroom learning focused on treaties, Indigenous cultures and the relationships treaties represent. According to the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, which posted its programme on November 2, students across its schools will take part in learning experiences honouring Indigenous culture and history and deepening their understanding of treaty rights.
The board says its Indigenous Education team has gathered resources from Ontario.ca, including videos suitable for different grade levels featuring Indigenous Elders and knowledge keepers, alongside the province's treaties information curated by the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs. Ontario passed legislation in 2016 declaring the first week of November as Treaties Recognition Week.
According to the Halton Catholic District School Board's Lumen Christi school update for November 2 to 6, November is also Indigenous Awareness Month at the board, with Treaties Recognition Week celebrated November 2 to 6 to educate students about the importance of treaties. The same update notes Inuit Day on November 7, recognising the cultures, histories and contributions of Inuit peoples.
The week also includes National Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8, according to the Halton update, extending the learning beyond the classroom week.
For families, the week is a chance to talk with children about the treaties covering the land their school sits on, using the public Ontario.ca resources the boards have highlighted.
