Cineplex Posts Record Quarter as North American Box Office Passes $8B

Cineplex, Canada's largest exhibitor, has reported the highest quarterly box office revenue in its history, generating CAD $215.7 million in the third quarter of 2026 — up 35% from a year earlier — according to The Canadian Press. September also set a company record with CAD $45.1 million in ticket sales, following an August that was already Cineplex's biggest month ever.

The strong performance was driven by Spider-Man: Brand New Day — which became the highest-grossing domestic release of all time — The Odyssey, which set Cineplex's premium-format record, and Resident Evil, which posted the franchise's biggest opening weekend. More revealingly, premium experiences accounted for more than half of quarterly box office revenue, while box office revenue per patron exceeded CAD $14 for the first time in company history, The Canadian Press reports.

The Canadian results reinforce a broader North American trend: the U.S. and Canadian box office passed USD $8 billion on October 9, reaching the milestone 59 days earlier than in 2025 and running approximately 20% ahead of last year, according to Celluloid Junkie. Cineplex also reported its highest quarterly theatre food service revenue, as record guest spending rode the premium wave.

The timing is especially interesting because Cineplex's board is exploring strategic alternatives, including a potential sale, under newly appointed CEO Bill Walker. "The consistency over the past several quarters, including a record-setting third quarter, reflect the appeal of the theatrical experience," Walker said. Record revenues should make for an interesting conversation with prospective buyers.

Ultimately, Cineplex's results provide yet another example of how stronger box office receipts don't mean attendance has fully recovered — but they do show moviegoers are increasingly willing to pay for a premium experience. Like most major cinema chains worldwide, Cineplex is discovering that the theatrical rebound is becoming less a collection of successful weekends and more a sustained business trend.
